What score do I need to pass the Pennsylvania notary exam?

A scaled score of 75 on a 0 to 100 scale, which isn't the same as 75% correct. Pennsylvania doesn't publish how many correct answers that takes, so this practice exam uses a 70% passing mark.

How the real Pennsylvania notary exam works

  • 30 multiple choice questions with a 60 minute time limit. 25 are scored and 5 are unscored, and each real question has three answer choices.
  • Passing takes a scaled score of 75 on a 0 to 100 scale, which isn't the same as 75% correct. Pennsylvania doesn't publish how many correct answers that takes, so this practice exam uses a 70% passing mark.
  • Pearson VUE gives the exam for the Pennsylvania Department of State.
  • You must finish a 3-hour notary education course approved by the Department of State before you apply. This practice exam doesn't replace that course.

Topics the Pennsylvania notary exam tests most

Practice exam questions are spread across every topic. These carry the most questions, so they are worth studying first:

  • Bond, Oath, Recording and the 45-Day Rule
  • The Notary Journal
  • Personal Appearance, Identification and Refusal
  • Acknowledgments, Oaths, Verifications and Signature Witnessing
  • Notarial Certificates and Short Forms
  • Prohibited Acts, the Unauthorized Practice of Law and Advertising

How to use your practice exam score

  • Take the full 30-question exam under the timer to practice your pacing.
  • Your results break your score down by topic, so you know which topics to study first.
  • A good rule of thumb: book the real exam once you score 80% or higher on several timed practice exams.
